What is different about coverage in Maine
MaineCare, the state's Medicaid program, is run by the Office of MaineCare Services within Maine DHHS, and since moving off the federal platform Maine now runs its own ACA marketplace at CoverME.gov. Maine Medical Insurance's phone help for Maine callers -- Medicare, ACA, life, or supplemental coverage -- costs nothing.
- MaineCare Member Services (1-800-977-6740), part of the Office of MaineCare Services within Maine's Department of Health and Human Services, handles Medicaid eligibility and enrollment.
- Maine built its own ACA exchange, CoverME.gov, after leaving the federal HealthCare.gov platform -- that's where Maine plan shopping and subsidy questions are handled now.
- Maine's Bureau of Insurance staffs a free SHIP counseling line at 1-877-353-3771 for Medicare questions, separate from Maine Medical Insurance's own free phone help.
Worth knowing: Maine is one of the smaller number of states that migrated its ACA marketplace off HealthCare.gov entirely and onto its own technology at CoverME.gov, rather than staying on the federal platform under state oversight the way Arkansas or Oklahoma do.

Where do I shop for ACA health plans in Maine?
Maine residents shop through CoverME.gov (https://www.coverme.gov). An independent agent such as Lander LLC can explain the plans for you, but the marketplace is the only place premium tax credits are applied.
How do I apply for Medicaid in Maine?
Medicaid in Maine is run through Maine Office of MaineCare Services (DHHS) (https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/oms). Eligibility depends on income, household size and other factors, and it is decided by the state, not by an insurance agency.
Who regulates insurance in Maine?
Maine Bureau of Insurance (https://www.maine.gov/pfr/insurance) regulates insurance companies and agents in Maine. You can use it to check that an agent or company is licensed and to file a complaint.
Is there free, unbiased Medicare help in Maine?
Yes. Maine SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) (1-877-353-3771) offers free Medicare counseling through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), separate from any insurance agency.
Does Maine Medical Insurance cost anything to use?
There is no cost to call or to speak with an agent. Insurance premiums and plan costs are set by the insurance companies and are separate from our help.
